The Philippines currently faces one of its biggest challenge this 2018 as typhoon Ompong, aka Mangkhut, makes its way across the country. This level 5 super typhoon initially threatened to be more destructive as typhoon Yolonda and Ondoy. In a small strike of luck, the dreaded storm managed to calm itself down a little before it made its landfall in the Philippines. Experts, however, said that Ompong still remains as catastrophic as the two hurricanes that once left parts of the country into shambles.
According to reports, Ompong has a diameter of 1,100 kilometers as it brings with it heavy rains and strong winds. In fact, the winds are expected to reach 260 kph near the center. This is why a lot of local government units try their best to keep their people safe through meticulous preparation. In Marikina, however, many did not expect that the typhoon brought along with it something even more destructive.
Videos of the small tornado in Marikina are currently making rounds all over the internet. Some netizens were able to witness and film how the whirlwind wreaked havoc in the city. Other videos showed how the tornado had stopped festivities at a wedding as it ensued blackout and caused everyone at the reception to panic.
Marikina mayor Marcy Teodoro confirmed that the tornado damaged Marikina Cultural Center. He said that the twister managed to strip off the roof of the 800 square meter adobe structure. Apart from it, the twister also damaged 20 houses in barangays San Roque and Santa Elena.
It can be recalled that a similar natural calamity happened in Manila in 2016. This occurred in the midst of the southwest monsoon hitting the country. The 2016 tornado was said to have destroyed 100 houses in Intramuros and left 1 injured.
Meanwhile, netizens are now in great fear of what Ompong may bring further to our country.
