The Philippine transport system can really be considered a circus of sorts.
If we peek into a diary of an everyday commuter, it would surely be a delight to read. From excerpts of falling in line for hours just to ride the train to avoid the daily traffic, only to arrive late because the train broke down in the middle of the commute, then to the experience of commuting via EDSA which people say is the only place where you’ll find forever. Our roads are so congested and our traffic authority office instead of targeting the problem directly often comes up with hilarious ideas to lessen the congestion.
Ask any Filipino and they would surely agree that traffic is almost an epidemic here in the country. If you want to avoid it then your last resort would be to aboard our trains, which is often full of people and the hilarity ensues.
Just today what would otherwise be a usual, rowdy Thursday became action-filled when a man without clothes climbed up the fences and decided to hang out in the tracks of the train. Luckily, the train was able to stop in time. Two guards went in to check the situation, and that is when the action started. When they commanded the man to get out. He began to throw pebbles at them, what followed were minutes of stone throwing ala stone age.
Until one of the guards decided that he doesn’t have all day to play. So, he pulled out his gun and aimed for the man’s foot which quickly sent him to his feet, defenseless.
Passengers of the affected train got videos to document the whole incident. Although they found the scene hilarious, they also cannot believe that it lasted longer than it should because the guards decided to play stones.
After uploading the incident on social media, the post got attention quickly. As of this writing, the video already had almost 7 thousand likes and more than four thousand comments. The opinions were different. Some think that the man deserved being hit at the foot since he shouldn’t have climbed up in the rail tracks in the first place. Others are questioning the necessity of using a firearm just to debilitate the man and ultimately capture him.
More than the scene, if one would look closely into the picture, these are two problems – the problem of public transportation and the lack of education about the need to focus efforts into mental health.
Filipinos deserve better, and they definitely don’t deserve being late and a slash in their paycheck just because our government lacks effort and precaution to avoid these issues.
